Steak tasting competition proves ASDA
beef is top quality
Yorkshire beef farmer Ken Ford is celebrating
after winning the ASDA ‘Extra Special’ steak
competition held at the Great Yorkshire Show
on Wednesday 9 July.

More than twenty of ASDA’s Yorkshire beef
suppliers of the Extra Special range entered
the initiative in the run up to the show at Harrogate
and sent cattle into Anglo Beef Processors (ABP)
in York. Primal joints were then matured for
28 days before final sirloins were prepared.
Of the steaks submitted, six were selected for
the final and cooked in front of an audience
of farmers invited to a drinks reception on the
second day of the event. Judged on tenderness,
succulence and flavour, the winning cut at both
this and the same competition held by ASDA at
the Royal Highland was from a Limousin heifer.
The Yorkshire steak that took the first prize
had an outstanding organoleptic score of 50 out
of 50.
Commenting Jim Viggars, senior meat buyer at
ASDA said: “On the day of the competition,
our judges applauded all the Yorkshire beef farmers
that entered our steak tasting challenge. Evaluating
the meat, they said that the steaks were of an
extremely high standard and that they would be
proud to serve them in a restaurant. This echoes
the praise given to our Scottish beef suppliers
following a similar competition at the Royal
Highland. The judge at that event, George McIvor,
a past Chairman of the Master Chefs of Great
Britain, said that the Scottish winning steak
was on a par with the best steak he had ever
tasted. The fact that both winners were from
the Limousin breed proves that you can have conformation
without compromising on eating quality, and we
will continue to support our farmers in producing
beef that is of the highest possible standard.”
Additional farmers acknowledged in ASDA’s
steak competition included Don Gilbert who came
second and received £300 worth of ASDA
vouchers, and David Lumley who came third and
received £200 worth of vouchers.
